Publication alert in the "Holiday" (what happened to month's?) issue of Guitar Player with Carlos Santana on the cover. There's a short interview with Marty Stuart---there are a couple of paragraphs about how he purchased Clarence's tele, benders and the "Hummingbyrd" tribute cut on his new album. Apparently Clarence had a '54 Strat that his wife was willing to sell (one of the pickups allegedly ended up as the tele neck pickup). Marty got the strat, the bender-tele, some Nudie suits and Byrds memorabilia for $1450 (the mind boggles).

Actually, in the article Marty was prepared to go 50-60,000. She wouldn't take more than $1450!!!!

Where can this issue be found?

As far as "HummingByrd", I would give anything if I could learn that entire piece of music! I think that was the absolute perfect tribute to Clarence!

And, I sure would love to hold that guitar once more, too....even as heavy as it is!

Marty got all that stuff for $1,450.00?? How much did he actually pay her when he bought "Clarence" from her?

Let's not forget that those were 1970s dollars. He'd probably have to pay at least $1675 to buy it today. Wink

Roland sent Marty to Susie. He may be able to verify the story. I believe Marty.
