He was known for playing Dual Showmans, a Super Reverb , sometimes a Leslie rotating speaker as an effect. For effects...it was either just plugged in and cranked up or a distortion pedal such as a Fender Blender, Mosrite Fuzz Rite, or a custom pedal that was made for him by Valley Sound.
For small club gigs and studio, he used a Vibrolux Reverb...he also used a Princeton Reverb in the studio.
We've never heard that he played a Twin Reverb.
This amp looks like a Dual Showman Reverb

Hmm, fuzz must have been later judging by the photo. |

I think it's just hit and miss.. Looks like he used pedals early on and also later..by these photos...
In the studio shot you can see a Fender Blender on the floor (underneath the stool legs).. Also he's ready to step on one in the other photo

getbent, for the live performances your talking about, it's just a super reverb and/or showman (ignoring the super reverb-driven vibratone swirly stuff for now) and the fuzz pedal for 'Hold It' and parts of 'Wheels On Fire'/'King Apathy'/'Eight Miles High', just like the others have said. Amps with four 6L6s cranked - that's the sound.
It's the volume, man. |

Plus, the Showman-Reverb had a master volume ..maybe Clarence utilized that too. |

I love that Flexdrive pedal for adding a little edge (or big edge) to a clean Fender amp. I usually use a twin or Dual Professional and it adds that cranked bite without shattering the windows. It is the best effect pedal I have bought in quite a while, top quality. For my ears it gives the sound heard on "Lover of the Bayou". I am sure there are purist who will argue this, but I am a pedal steel player first and guitarist second.

Just received my flex drive in the mail a couple of days ago. Haven't had a chance to spend much time with it yet but so far I'm lovin' it. |

I resurrected an old LPBx-Blender that I had buried in a drawer. It was one of my original units in a hacked up pedal enclosure...functional but not pretty. Anyway I added the tone switch that the original Fender Blender had and also an extra switch to eliminate the octave setting and the pedal kicks some serious Clarence Untitled-Boston Tea Party butt... running into my Vibro Champ Reverb is fun...the amp is progressing to the point that sounds really great but needs some low end improvement. I plan on adding a bigger transformer which should help and eventually stick it in it's own cabinet with either a 10 or 12 in speaker..
