This photo of CW appears on the back of Maria Muldaurs' first album along with numerous other musicians . Being an amateur slueth of old guitars on album covers for over forty years I have studied this photo before and come to the conclusion that this guitar is not the Noble guitar and couldn't possibly be the '35 D-28 that came into the hands of Tony Rice several years later .
I'll go way out on a limb here and say that it's an old Martin Herringbone D-28 pre-war as they say w/ narrow ivoroid binding and the pickwear of an older guitar.
I'll go one step further and speculate that since the year is 1973 and David Nichtern also appears on the album and was known to own and play a great sounding herringbone D-28 ( you can hear him on live recordings of " The Great American Music Band " w/ David Grisman , Richard Greene , & Taj Mahal ) , CW may have borrowed the guitar on the Maria Muldaur sessions for several cuts hence the photo with a strange guitar.
Anyway , just a theory of mine . I discovered the forum a couple of years ago and lurked but never joined until today.

The single narrow rosette gives it away.
