According to his brother Roland, it was banjo player Earl Scruggs. (Jerry Garcia said Clarence played electric guitar "like a banjo player.")

In Russ Barenberg's "Clarence White Guitar," Clarence's brother Roland states that the musician who influenced Clarence the most was Earl Scruggs -- both his banjo and his guitar playing.
